Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has rubbished claims that he had the chance to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford this summer.
Manchester United fans still dream of seeing Ronaldo in the red shirt but Ronaldo surprised everyone by moving from Real Madrid to Juventus for 112-million-euro deal this summer. Reports surfaced in the build-up to United's Premier League clash with Burnley that Ronaldo was open to a return to Old Trafford in the close-season, only for Mourinho to refuse the opportunity to sign the 33-year-old.
Following United’s 2-0 victory, Mourinho rubbished such claims and insisted that he never had the chance to sign the Portuguese superstar.
Cristiano was never on my table to say yes or no," Mourinho said when asked about the speculation, told reporters.
"Cristiano to come to us, it was never on my table."
Mourinho came under fire this season as United started the season poorly, losing the two of the first three Premier League matches before yesterday’s win at Burnley. Mourinho said he was happy with the performance from the players while downplaying his own role in success in success or failure.
"The manager is not important; the team is important. The manager does not play.
"I have miles and miles and miles on the touchline to cope with every different reaction from the crowd. I am really happy with the performance, the result and to give that good feeling to the fans."
Ronaldo will play against his former club Manchester United after Juve were drawn in the same group as the Premier League giants.
“Juventus is one of the teams in Europe who invested to win the Champions League, because they don’t need to invest to win the Scudetto,’ said Mourinho.
‘They win the Scudetto for six or seven years. The objective is clearly to win the Champions League, which they were close twice when they reach the final, they are a top team in Europe that made one of the biggest spending, after Liverpool.
‘Fantastic players, Cristiano and Can and Bonucci, absolutely top but they are going to have two very difficult matches against us,” Mourinho said on the upcoming matches.
