Today was the final day of this new event concept called European Championships 2018 which combined various different sport disciplines within one event instead of separate isolated "tournaments". Think the idea behind was to make it more attractive towards audience, visitors and position it in a more visual way such as Olympics or the Football World / Euro Championships.
The 2018 European Championships have been the first edition of this multi-sport event which took place in Glasgow and Berlin since August 2. While it is ONE united event all different sports divisions organised their own competition - it was just organised under this first one roof. Most of the stuff took place in Glasgow and its surroundings such as:
- Swimming
- Track and road cycling
- Mountain biking
- Rowing and triathlon
- Artistic gymnastics
Berlin, the German capital hosted the athletics part - track & field - while diving and golf took place in Edinburgh and Gleneagles.
New concept seems a success
I think the new concept was a success and new dates are discussed. There might be some additional sport divisions joining for the next edition, eventually Beach Ball. Also it is discussed that the event shall take place in one City only, maybe Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, London, Paris. As a German I have to say to be positively surprised by the athletics team - they won much more as expected even a disaster was happening today with the 4x100 relay team crashing out of heat after a changeover chaos in the semi-final which results in a nasty fall.
I was also happy with the cycling teams, the swim team has improved a bit - the rowing was a disaster based on the fact many of the top boats did not attend this rowing part of the championship.
