Recently, I read an article about how AI had been used to help human judges attribute D-Scores to gymnasts since the 2019 World Gymnastics Championships. In particular, they used a system called JSS (Judging Support System). So that got me thinking, what if I use AI to score one of my gymnastics videos, specially the "D-Score breakdown series", where I have already analyzed all the skills, connections and points that make up the final D-Score.So, taking the above video as an example, the D-Score analyzed by a human being goes something like this:The gymnast starts with a quadruple turn, called a Gomez (E), but since she didn't complete the 4 turns on her toes, lowering her heels more or less after the 3.5 turn mark, the skill is downgraded to a 3/1 turn (C). This earns her a DV of 0.3.She then approaches the corner to perform her first acrobatic series, a roundoff (A), followed by a back handspring (A) followed by a backward layout salto with 2.5 twists (D) connected to an immediate forward tuck salto (A). With the backward layout salto with 2.5 twists she fulfills the "360º twist" Composition Requirement, worth 0.5 points, and with the forward tuck, she fulfills the "salto bwd and salto fwd", Composition Requirement (CR). Since A & B skills are dropped from the score as only the top 8 skills are counted, she gets a DV of 0.4, plus 1 CR, plus a Connection Value (CV) of 0.1 for the D+A connection.She continues with her dance passage, another requirement, consisting of a switch split ring leap (C) and a Frolova (C), for which she gets a DV of 0.6, plus 0.5 CR.She performs her 2nd tumbling pass, made up of a whip (A), followed by immediate backward triple twist layout (E), for which she receives a 0.5 DV, plus a 0.2 CV for the A+E connection.The next skill she performs is a Memmel turn (D), which earns her a DV of 0.4.Her dismount comes next, which is a backward double pike salto (D), which is awarded with a DV of 0.4 and a 0.2 bonus for doing a D or higher dismount. She also fulfills the last of the 4 CR (double salto), which gets her 0.5.The exercise finishes with a split turn 1/1 (C).The following skill values are counted towards the DV: C D C C E D D C, with a total 2.9, the total CR is 2.0 with a CV of 0.5. Hence, the final D-Score for this floor routine is 5.4 (which would have been 5.6 without the Gomez downgrade).I used ChatGPT-4 to analyze the same routine and this is what it came up with: "The gymnast starts with a roundoff (B) followed by a back handspring (B) and a double tuck salto backward (D) as her first tumbling pass. This earns her a DV of 0.9 and a CV of 0.1 for the B+B+D connection. She then performs a split leap (A) with a full turn © and a split jump (A) with a half turn (B) as her first dance series. This earns her a DV of 0.8 and a CV of 0.1 for the A+C+A+B connection. She also fulfills one of the composition requirements (CR) for having a dance series with two different leaps or jumps with a minimum of 180° split. She continues with a roundoff (B) followed by a one and a half twist salto forward (D) and a front layout salto (B) as her second tumbling pass. This earns her a DV of 0.9 and a CV of 0.1 for the B+D+B connection. She then performs a switch leap © with a half turn and a ring leap (D) as her second dance series. This earns her a DV of 0.7 and a CV of 0.1 for the C+D connection. She also fulfills another CR for having a leap or jump with a minimum of 180° split and a ring position. She follows with a roundoff (B) followed by a back handspring (B) and a double twist salto backward (D) as her third tumbling pass. This earns her a DV of 0.9 and a CV of 0.1 for the B+B+D connection. She then performs a wolf jump (A) with a full turn © and a sissone (A) as her third dance series. This earns her a DV of 0.8 and a CV of 0.1 for the A+C+A connection. She also fulfills another CR for having a dance element with a full turn on one foot. She finishes with a roundoff (B) followed by a back handspring (B) and a double pike salto backward (E) as her fourth and final tumbling pass. This earns her a DV of 1.1 and a CV of 0.1 for the B+B+E connection. She also fulfills the last CR for having an acrobatic series with a salto backward and a minimum of two saltos or two flight elements. The total DV for this routine is 5.1, the total CV is 0.7, and the total CR is 2.5. Therefore, the final D-Score for this routine is 8.3."So, there are many problems with the AI analysis, starting with the skills that she doesn't do in her routine, which I highlighted in bold. If you add the fact that every single skill is counted towards CV, not taking into account that only the 8 skills with the highest value should be counted, and that many skills have the wrong CV (the roundoff and back handspring are valued as "B", though they are both "A"). Also, the maximum CR gymnasts can get is 2.0, while ChatGPT-4's analysis is counting 2.5.Summing up, I don't think AI, or at least ChatGPT is to be trusted fully to write gymnastics D-Scores analysis, but I can't wait for it to become better.
