We all have some favorite movies that quite often are not that good to the others that watched them. We can see online so many lists about everything that are more or less subjective. I don't say my list of basketball movies are quite different, it's not movie critics of that movies, it's just how much I liked them. But for some of them, you just can't say that they are not good.
I will try with the top 5 list of basketball movies
5. Celtic Pride (1996)
Ok, if you are not Celtics fan then this film for sure is not on your list. I am absolutely aware that if this movie was about some other club fans that it would not be as good for me. Shortly, this movie is about two die-hard Celtics fans who kidnap star player of opponent team so he could not play in the decisive game against Boston.
If you don't recognize yourself in any of the lines in the movie, then you are not as big fan as you thought. For me, much better movies about fans dedication are Fever Pitch, english version from 1997 with Colin Firth, but in that movie, he is FC Arsenal Fan. There is also quite good US version from 2005 with Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore where Fallon is Boston Red Sox fan.
4. Blue Chips (1994)
Nick Nolte is great in role of college basketball coach with a topic of the film that is still current, about forbidden practice to pay basketball players in NCAA. This film is about pressure that coaches have, about choices you made and consequences. In movie also appear young Shaquille O'Neal and Penny Hardaway. Couple of legendary scenes in movie like the Final speech of coach Pete Bell.
3. White Man Can't Jump (1992)
Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson are great in the roles of hustlers who plays street basketball for money and there is also super sexy Rosie Perez who play Woody's girlfriend. Great and funny dialogues, good street basketball, sometimes little unrealistic when you think how can Wesley Snipes dunk so easy when he is 5'10'' but that's all ok.
This is the one of the most funniest films for me and always when I catch it, I am watching it until the end. And some fun fact, first choices for roles were Denzel Washington and Keanu Reeves, but for sure they wouldn't be as good as Wesley and Woody.
2. Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault (1996)
Don Cheadle play Earl "The Goat" Manigault, for lot of people, including Kareem Abdul Jabbar, the best basketball player that never made it to the NBA. In movie that tracks his earliest basketball steps where, even that he was not that tall (6'0''), he had incredible skills and vertical jump. This movie is about some wrong choices and path of redemption. Like Earl Manigault said: "For every Michael Jordan, there's an Earl Manigault. We all can't make it. Somebody has to fall. I was the one".
Also, young Kevin Garnett appears in one scene as Wilt Chamberlain.
1.He Got Game (1998)
If you love basketball there is a zero chance that you didn't saw this movie. Ray Allen plays very talented high school basketball players Jesus Shuttlesworth and Denzel Washington plays, for me his the best role ever, his father Jake who gets out of the jail for short time to convince his son to help him to reduce his prison sentence. This films shows how the players are treated when money is becoming close to them and how everyone wants their cut.
Lot of famous basketball names have some cameos in this film but for me, the best scene is ride with Big Time Willie.
