Brighton v Bournemouth

Bournemouth are in complete free fall at the moment and baring a victory against basement team Huddersfield they have not won a league game since January. With 38 points they are not mathematically safe but it would take a bizarre set of circumstances for them to go down. For Brighton, things have hardly been much better. Back to back wins against whipping boys Huddersfield and rivals Crystal Palace eased immediate concerns over the drop but that has been followed up a couple of league defeats and their exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Man City last weekend. If the Seagulls can show the same kind of fight that they did at Wembley on Saturday then you would have thought that they will be safe but a poor showing here and other results going against them could yet mean that Brighton get involved in a relegation dog fight.

Form-wise it's difficult to take many clues as to which way this match will go. Brighton haven't scored in any of their last 3 matches and have generally struggled to hit the back of the net at the Amex with just 17 goals all season (3rd lowest in the league). However, this game represents a must-win match for them suggests that they will be up for the fight and their chances of getting 3 points are boosted by the fact that they are up against the league's 2nd worst defence away from home with Bournemouth also having lost 10 of their last 11 away games.

Burnley v Cardiff

Burnley looked dead and buried at Christmas but have turned it around in the 2nd half of the season and are now 8 points clear of their visitors and the relegation zone. As such a win in this fixture would secure their league status for another season and put a major dent in Cardiff's hopes of avoiding an immediate drop back down to the 2nd tier of English football.

Burnley's home form this season has been a cause for concern especially given that Turf Moor has been a difficult place for even the biggest EPL teams to get a result in recent years. However, this doesn't really look like a Cardiff side that will be able to take advantage of this fact with the Bluebirds having only registered 2 wins on their travels this season, netting a league-low 9 goals in those 15 outings. At the other end, much of Burnley's resurgence since the start of the calendar year has been based upon the form of strike duo Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood and they will hope to enjoy themselves against the leagues 3rd worst defence.

Cardiff desperately need a win but I just can't see them getting it. Beyond just their recent form, history also seems against them - they haven't won at Burnley in 20 years and despite a long career spanning many different clubs, Neil Warnock has never beaten a team managed by Sean Dyche.

Southampton v Wolves

If you missed it, there was an excellent analysis by @eoghan.mcmonagle about Wolves struggles this season against sides in the bottom 6. Several theories have been suggested as to why they don't play as well in these games so it will be interesting to see if the pattern continues.

Of course, the visitors will still be licking their wounds from last Sunday's FA Cup defeat when they let a 2 goal lead slip against Watford to end what was looking like a run to the final and potential cup glory. It's been a great first season back in the top flight for Wolves and with the club sure to be splashing the cash in the summer you would have thought that the players have something to play for - a place in the starting 11 next year! However, Southampton have even more reason for putting in a big performance in this game - survival!

In fact, putting in a performance hasn't really been Saints problem all year, it is more translating that good play into results. They have contrived to drop 15 points from winning positions at home this season a statistic that they won't want to add to in this game. With Cardiff and Brighton also in action at 3pm this looks likely to be a season defining weekend at the bottom of the Premier League.
