SC Freiburg v Borussia Mönchengladbach Budesliga Preview and Prediction

Friday night once again sees a match involving SC Freiburg as they host Champions League contenders Borussia Mönchengladbach.

For the home team, the return to football has not been what they would have hoped for with a record to date of played 4, won 0. That dramatic dip in form since the restart has seen them slip from just a point off a Europa League spot to 4 points behind Wolfsburg and indeed if it hadn't been for the calamitous form of the sides around them i.e. Schalke then things could be even worse.

It's interesting to note that at the point the league was suspended that Freiburg had 36 points to their name which is exactly the total they have finished the season with in each of the last 2 years. It's not unusual to see teams of Freiburg's quality playing for a specific points haul in order to guarantee top-flight football for the next year and it's tempting to believe that having done so again this side has run out of steam to push for anything more. A growing injury list also suggests that this is a squad that is looking forward to a summer holiday more than they are the next win.

Their total expected goals in the last 4 games is 2.51 with only Schalke and Union Berlin offering less of a threat upfront than Freiburg. 3 of the 4 goals they have scored since the return came courtesy of some very generous defending from Frankfurt and you'd be surprised if this Borussia MG side will roll over quite as easily.

By comparison, Borussia MG have an attacking fulcrum based around Florian Neuhaus, Marcus Thuram and Alassane Plea all of who have been in excellent form of late. A win tonight would put them level on points with 2nd placed Dortmund and put pressure on the other 3 teams in the hunt for the final Champions League places who all play over the weekend.

It would be tempting to suggest that the pressure of such an occasion might get to BMG but if their last outing is anything to go by when they thrashed Union Berlin 4-1 then they are not showing it and they will be keen to better their 5th placed finish from last year.

I'm backing BMG to win this one and by 2 clear goals.

Prediction: Borussia MG to win handicap -1 odds of 2.8 or higher
