When his release clause is triggered, Erling Haaland looks likely to spark one of the biggest transfer races in football history next summer.

With a Champions League brace and a dazzling Bundesliga goal, the 20-year-old Borussia Dortmund hero re-established himself as probably the world’s best young striker last week.

Norwegian’s future amid links to almost every big club in Europe and his contract includes a £65million release clause which becomes valid from June 2022, and it is widely accepted that Dortmund has always been a stepping stone for the forward.

As possible suitors for Haaland, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain have all been listed, while English clubs like Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea are also involved.

When he joined Dortmund in January 2020, Manchester United famously tried and struggled to sign the former RB Salzburg player, while Man City are now on the lookout for a new striker as Sergio Aguero winds down near the end of his career.

The Dortmund striker has also been linked to Chelsea, but it is the opinion and rumour that Haaland is likely to join Man City. According to talkSPORT’s European football expert Mark Langdon, the next destination of Haaland is most likely to be in the Premier League due to financial difficulties among Europe’s other giants.

Mark Langdon said: “He’s very smart and very patient about the moves that he’s already made. He could’ve gone to a bigger league and team than Borussia Dortmund, albeit they are a big one themselves.“

He recognised it was too big a jump to go to a Real Madrid type of team from Salzburg.

“He went to Salzburg, then Dortmund, I reckon he’ll spend another year or so there.

“They’ll get what they need out of him and then he can be on his way for that contract release clause.

“Where will he go? I feel like the Premier League at the moment is the place with the money. I’m looking at Real Madrid and Barcelona and thinking, ‘How could they afford to buy him?’

“If you’re looking at the Premier League and thinking about a team that needs a striker, Manchester City would feel like the obvious choice.

“He’s not a Pep type of player, but I’m sure they could fit him in somewhere.”

Do you actually think Erling Haaland would play for Man City someday?
