It is apparent that the WBC is now making belts for any champion or event they see fit.
I believe the diamond belt was up for grabs when he went to war with Golovkin.. as well as being available for such exhibitions as McGregor vs. Mayweather.
I don't believe they demoted current champion Jermall Charlo in any way, but they definitely put Canelo on a pedestal with this award.. and this type of nepotism is sickening in any sport.
Combat sports have always had the most brash personnel in terms of presidents and chairmans, they can act a bit rash especially when it comes to profit and athletes who make them the most of it..
My personal favorite boxer Jermall Charlo should in essence be the leading contender to face Canelo, especially with guys like Jacobs and Golovkin somewhat out of the picture for now.
Alvarez surprised me with his dominant win over Daniel Jacobs as I thought he deserved neither win over Golovkin at the time. Many consider Canelo the number one pound for pound fighter in the world, but many also dispute the legitimacy of his road to top 10.
Close decision wins and the loss to Floyd Mayweather made most feel that Canelo was more a product of Golden Boy Promotions than anything else, his undefeated record was blemished post 2013 and his rise back to the top was doubted by many (including me).
I must that say that Canelo's evolution as a fighter has improved his all around skill set... his dominance over a legend like Cotto really set the pace for how the rest of his career would look.
One must admire Canelo's willingness to move up to middleweight and fight the most feared man in the division. Regardless of the outcome of both of his fights with GGG, I still believe it was admirable to put up such close and enduring performances.
Being the franchise champion has really cemented Canelo's status as the 'golden goose', many fighters most likely want a fight with Alvarez as he has in essence become the new Floyd... the only difference is that all of Latin America roots for Canelo whereas they prayed on the 'Money' man's downfall.
I really do hope that Jermall Charlo gets a chance to prove himself against the great Canelo, he has fought at middleweight his whole life and his power and skills are on par (if not better) than Golovkin's. Charlo is the dark horse of his division... but he prefers to be called 'young lion'.
