On his way to becoming the greatest cruiserweight of all time, Oleksandr Usyk just stepped into the hometown of his opponent Murat Gassiev and dominated him bell to bell. The Ukrainian wonder had a phenomenal performance in the heart of Moscow, and it is by far the most illustrious win of the gold medalist's career.
The crowd was enthralled by every minute of action, and Usyk's violent dance was absolutely beautiful to watch. Gassiev was an astounding 26-0 with 19 knockouts which is incredible for a division in which each man is just as strong and durable as the next. Usyk's masterclass this evening in Russia put him on the map as the unified, undisputed, and undefeated 15-0 champion.
Usyk is now the lineal champion, the Ring magazine champion, and one of the top pound for pound fighters on Earth along with being a former gold medalist. With this massive win over Gassiev and his possession of the Muhammad Ali trophy, Usyk's name will finally be worth its true measure. The titles, trophies and acclaim will bring Usyk the eventual opportunity to possibly move up to heavyweight and put his skills to work in that division.
A man only 15 fights deep into his pro boxing career just became the first undisputed champion since Evander Holyfield. This is an incredible feat and an overall monster task to overcome in the face of an enemy crowd. The Moscow crowd held no punches but neither did Usyk, and it was a fantastic affair between two of the best cruiserweights on the planet.
