Mauricio Sulaiman has been in front of the World Boxing Council (WBC) for over six years. And, from day one, the Mexican leader has fought a complicated fight, where he sometimes hits and at other times he's given a reverse.

The problem is, as in most competitions occur, business prevails over sports. However, the WBC boss has been always clear that the health of the boxers is the first round to win.

"The point is that it is not a popularity contest. Our decisions are often questioned and are even rejected. We must take care of the boxer himself", said Sulaiman in an interview with Infobae Mexico.

The craving for triumph in boxers is at times a hindrance for health awareness. “A boxer is determined to get into the ring and do the necessary to get ahead in life, to become champion. If asked to fight 50 rounds, then he fights”. he said.

Therefore, the chairman of the organization said that it is the responsibility of the CMB to set the rules and procedures to care about the integrity of the fighters. "Get off 15 to 12 rounds, do the weighing a day before, set up four ropes in the ring instead of three, the certification of boxing gloves and many things we have done," he said.

Sulaiman also spoke about Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez and the recognition given by the council as the best fighter of the year. “This Canelo has been a great example of life. He's been very successful from youth, very popular. He overcame many obstacles in life, but today we can adventure that he is the best fighter in the world and that he has a great maturity as a human being, ”he stated.

This Aztec boxer gets what it means to be a sports figure. "Passing that to children and youth is of great importance," he added.

The head of the WBC also reminded how it was to be part of the fight between Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury, probably one of the best battles of the year, in which he won the second by Knock Out in the seventh round. He indicated that what they were looking for was to give the public a first level show.

“We had two boxers above the ring and they had already drawn a year and a half ago, a great expectation for a rematch was on. When you do it in passionately and when you understand the need for these fights, it becomes very special, ”said the Mexican.

He said this clash took him to the times of Americans Mike Tyson or Evander Holyfield. “The interest was barbaric worldwide. An electric environment that was spectacular and a fight that was brilliant: a dramatic knockout to the champion, and now champion again” he stressed.

Finally, Mauricio Sulaimán told Infobae Mexico a few months ago that the WBC was looking for Andy Ruiz to offer him assistance. This because the Mexican had disappeared from the boxing spotlight after losing his world belt last year against Briton Anthony Joshua.

“I don't know where Andy Ruiz might be. The idea is to spot him, have a talk and offer him the hand of the World Boxing Council. After having conquered the glory it hurts that he had eventually lost everything, he deserves the chance to return and fight for the championship, ”said the leader on this occasion.
