The world champion for the middleweight section Saul Canelo Alvarez has put to pen a contract agreement with DAZN which is a streaming service. The deal is expected to run for five years and is expected to cover about 11 fights. This deal is considered to be the biggest deal in the history of all sporting activities. The contract is estimated to be at least $356 million. No other contract which has been signed with a sporting athlete has ever reached the 356 million mark.
It is worthy to note that DAZN recently officially become the hub of everything boxing in the United States. This deal comes just after HBO which once held that title announced that it would be calling it quits from the boxing world. This new contract which has been signed by Alvarez is expected to signal the start of a long partnership with DAZN which would inevitably involve millions of dollars. Alvarez is scheduled to open his new contract with his fight under the super middleweight category. This fight is expected to see him come face to face with the champion of the secondary division Rocky Fielding. This fight is expected to take place on the 15th of December at Madison Square in the city of New York.
In a comment which was made to ESPN, one of his promoters remarked quite assertively that Cancelo is now at the very top regarding the salary which is received by athletes in the world. He also made it a point of duty to state that Cancelo is extremely happy with the way things have turned out.
It should be noted that the closest contract to the one which he signed is that of Giancarlo Stanton whose contract ran for about 13 years and is worth approximately $325million. That contract was signed with the Miami Marlins way back in 2014. The deal did not last long though as Giancarlo has now moved on to the Yankees after just four years.
Alvarez seems to have officially ascended to the Mayweather’s throne in boxing as the highest paid boxer after this deal. Fans can expect to see his fights for about $9.99 under DAZN. This is remarkably affordable than when HMO was in charge. You would be to see a match for about $80 per fight. It is worthy to mention that the $9.99 is on a monthly basis. Saul noted the difference between the prices. He explained to ESPN that one of the motivating factors behind his decision was the fact that most of his fans would get to see his matches at very moderate prices.
He also noted that one thing that was most important was the ability to bring his biggest fights to the viewing of his fans. He feels that he is ready for the challenge which would come with fighting Fielding in December. He told that with the fans backing him, he would be unstoppable.
