Chess superstars in 'Battle of Legends'!

Chess fanatics around the world will see the talents of the two most popular Chess Grandmasters - Eugene Torre of the Philippines and Anatoly Karpov of Russia - to perform 'Battle of Legends' on June 26 to July 1 in Platja D' Aro in Spain.

"The legend" will serve as a highlight in the week-long International Chess Festival "Vila de Platja D 'Aro. Also featured in Platja D 'Aro, a seaside resort town in Catalonia, GM Lujbomir Ljubojevic of Yugoslavia and reigning world seniors champion Anatoly Vaisser.

The winner of the fast play is equal to 2 points while 1 point is reserved for the winner at the blitz. The player who gets the most points will be the champion.

"I'm excited to play with Tolya (nicknamed Karpov) again," Torre said, bronze medalist on board three in the last Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan in 2016.

Kasparov's hand is a 4-2 advantage over Torre in their head-to-head duel over the past five decades.

However, the history of the Philippine Chess was not forgotten in the 1976 Marlboro-Loyola Kings Challenge where Torre topped the four-man tournament which included former world champion Karpov, Ljubomir Ljubojevic of Yugoslavia and Walter Browne of the United States .

In the tournament, Torre defeated Karpov for the first time playing the Russian Grandmaster in a tournament since the world champion.

'It's been a while, but it's a treasure,' said 66-year-old Torre.

Torre is scheduled to leave June 23 to prepare for the tournament early.

Torre became the first Asian Grandmaster to win the silver medal at the Chess Olympiad in Nice in 1974.

Torre is expected to re-join the Philippine Team to join the Olympics in Batumi, Georgia. In his career at the Olympiad, Torre became Board 1 player in the past 18 editions of the prestigious tournament.
