Hello Friends,

India’s neighbour, Bangladesh is visiting New Zealand and playing an ODI series with the hosts. New Zealand had already won the first match and in the second match that has been just completed New Zealand has again outplayed Bangladesh. New Zealand has therefore gained an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

This morning Bangladesh lost the toss and were invited to bat first by the hosts. The Bangladesh batsmen were dismissed by the New Zealand bowlers for only 226 runs in 49.4 overs. Both the Bangladeshi opening batsmen were out cheaply. It was with the help of Mohammed Mithun’s 57 runs and the 43 runs that Sabbir Rehman scored that Bangladesh managed to cross the two hundred mark. That score was not enough for Bangladesh to get a victory over the New Zealanders. Callum Fergusson was the highest wicket-taker for New Zealand as he sent three batsmen back to the pavilion.

New Zealand did not start very well themselves and lost their first wicket early. But Martin Guptill stitched together a fine partnership with Kane Williamson, the captain. Martin Guptill scored an attacking 118 runs off only 88 balls. Kane Williamson played a slow knock of 65 runs of 86 balls. But he along with Ross Taylor saw the match to the finish and both of them remained not out. New Zealand won the match by 8 wickets with 88 balls remaining to be bowled in their inning. The Bangladeshi Bowler Mustafizur Rehman was the only successful Bangladeshi bowler claiming both the wickets to fall.

Most notable in the match was the inning that Martin Guptill played. He has scored three centuries in 2019 in One-day cricket internationals. This is the second century that he has scored against Bangladesh in consecutive matches. Prior to that, he had scored a century against Sri Lanka. Though his performance against India was not very impressive this might serve as a warning to teams heading for the World Cup later this year.

Martin Guptill is the second highest scorer of runs in ODIs in 2019. He has scored 435 runs this year. Ross Taylor, who is the leading run-getter of runs in ODIs this year, has accumulated 524 runs. Kane Williamson, their captain comes close behind Guptill having scored 370 runs. That means that the top three run-getters in ODI’s this year are New Zealand batsmen.
