Considering the instability and turmoil that followed after the sandpaper gate incident in 2018, the Australian cricket team has taken rapid strides and is in number one position both in Test and T-20 rankings. Australia struggled initially in the absence of Steven Smith and David Warner due to suspension. The comeback of both these players has made a lot of difference.

Australia dethroned India to move to number one in the rankings. India was firmly on top of the rankings from 2016. Australia is at 116 points, New Zealand at 115 and India at 114."With only two points separating them, this is the second closest the top three teams have been since the Test rankings were launched in 2003," ICC said in its statement. The first time was in 2016 where India, Australia, and South Africa competed for the top spot.

Pakistan undisputedly held the number one position in T-20s for the past two years. Now Australia is leading with 278 points, followed by England at 268 and India at 266 points. Surprisingly, Pakistan has slipped to 4th spot with 258 points. England continues its domination in ODI cricket with 127 rating points, followed by India with 119 and New Zealand at 3rd place with 116 points.

Australia regained the Ashes in England. They were unbeaten in the home summer against Pakistan and New Zealand both in The test matches and T-20s. Solid performances like these has contributed to the ascent in the Test and T-20 rankings. Justin Langer, coach of the Australian team was very happy with the team's development. According to him, beating team India in a Test series in their home will mark them as true champions.
