Dinesh Chandimal, the Sri Lanka skipper, suffered a groin strain on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Galle, according to a media release from Sri Lanka Cricket on Tuesday (November 6). Chandimal is currently under observation and hasn't yet been ruled out of the game, added the release.
Chandimal left the field midway during the second session when he appeared to have strained his groin - limping towards the ball while fielding off Rangana Herath's bowling. Suranga Lakmal took over the captaincy duties in the absence of Chandimal, who to the relief of the home team returned to the field after the tea interval. However, he again walked off towards the end of the final session.
Chandimal had recently missed the Asia Cup due to a finger injury he sustained in a domestic T20 match. He had earlier served a six-match ban owing to a ball-tampering charge and spirit of cricket offence, forcing him to miss the majority of the home series against South Africa.
