It Takes Two, the 2021 Game of the Year, has reached an impressive new milestone, surpassing 20 million copies sold across all platforms, according to an announcement by Hazelight Studios.

A Record Achievement for Hazelight

In a statement shared on social media, the developer expressed his gratitude: “It Takes Two has sold more than 20 million copies. You’re the best fans in the world, how you have embraced our game is blowing our minds! We’re so grateful to every one of the millions upon millions who have enjoyed their time with Cody and May.”

Hazelight, already recognized for its co-op debut A Way Out, continued to build upon its reputation with It Takes Two. While A Way Out allowed for solo play, Hazelight’s second title fully embraced the cooperative experience—true to its name, the game requires two players to start the journey.

A Global Success Across Platforms

Released in March 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, It Takes Two quickly became a global hit. The game’s success was later bolstered by a release on Nintendo Switch in November 2022. The game won multiple prestigious awards, including Game of the Year at both The Game Awards 2021 and the 25th DICE Awards, cementing its place in gaming history.

A Unique Storyline and Cooperative Gameplay

*It Takes Two* centers around the narrative of Cody and May, a married couple teetering on the brink of separation.. Their daughter, Rose, struggling to cope with her parents' decision, attempts to mend their relationship by play-acting with two dolls she has crafted to look like them. When Rose's tears fall on the dolls, Cody and May are magically transformed into their miniature counterparts. The couple is then thrust into a whimsical adventure, fighting to reclaim their bodies, restore their daughter's happiness, and rediscover their own connection.

The gameplay is packed with creative mechanics, with both players working together to overcome a variety of challenges. This cooperative dynamic has been the core of the game’s success, making it one of the most engaging multiplayer experiences in recent years.

Friend’s Pass System Lowers Barriers

One of the key innovations contributing to the game's sales surge is the Friend’s Pass system, introduced by Hazelight and publisher EA. This feature allows an owner of the game to invite a friend to join them in playing, even if the friend hasn’t purchased the game. The system significantly lowered the entry barrier, making the title more accessible and encouraging a broader audience to experience the game.

Unprecedented Sales Growth

It Takes Two continues to defy expectations with its rapid sales growth. Hazelight’s previous update, issued in March 2024, reported 16 million copies sold. In the seven months since, the game has added an additional four million sales, further solidifying its position as one of the best co-op games ever made. This remarkable achievement highlights the enduring appeal of a game that, even years after its release, remains a beloved choice for players worldwide.
