Games have been around for centuries, maybe they were not that popular but they existed. In the past few years you can see how more and more people are interested in eSports. There are probably many driving factors of why games have become more relevant today. But back then people did not like video games. People thought it was a complete waste of time and you could not possibly make a living from sitting on a couch and looking at a screen all day. However, times are changing and here is a list of some driving factors of how and why eSports have gotten so big.

Diversity of Game Genres

Esports title games are mainly PC games with MOBAs like Heroes of the storm, Smite, Dota, League of Legends. Lets be honest MOBA games like these are very difficult to play, watch and understand. The only reason why I think MOBAs are popular because viewers think you have to be more skilled to play it. Buy wouldn't other game genres that are easier to play, watch and understand gain a lot more attention?

Games like Fortnite, ESL One, and Counter Strike: Global Offensive, all first person shooter games have grown really big, really fast. These games have beaten out League of Legends in Twitch hours in just one day! These games even have bigger prize pools when it comes to tournaments compared to League of Legends.

A wide variety of game developers are now pushing into esports.

Money

I think one of the top leading factors of people being interested in eSports is money. I mean who dose not like money? You can actually do something you love and make a living, it is basically a job. When most people think of jobs they think it is very miserable, especially if you have ever has a 9 to 5 job. But with eSports, you are no longer doing a boring miserable 9 to 5 job. You're making a living and having a great time while doing so.

Regulation of Competitions

Esports have grown a lot but do not get me wrong, I still believe that they still have much more room for growth. Right now we have groups of competitive gamers that compete against each other. Having a worthy opponent is what makes the game fun to play and watch. More and more companies are wanting to get involved with eSports because they see the potential to make lots of money. You can see companies dedicate to hosting eSport tournaments and even having multimillion dollar prize pool. Not only the company is making money, but gamers have the opportunity to also.

With prize pools getting so big they have to make many rules to keep out cheating and match fixing. Competitive Gamers have a lot of pressure if you think about it. The pressure could be from peoples expectations, money, trips where you are gone from home for long periods of time, etc. So I guess some people in the eSports industry try to use performance-enhancing drugs to play better. To many people this is unfair and should get you disqualified. People will also attempt to cheat, but now that is easily caught. The drug problem is kind of a issue, but how will organizers handle drug testing in the future?

There are probably a million other reasons why and how eSports have gotten so big so fast. That was just a couple of factors of what I put on the list.
