Updates

Crafting System: I've just been finishing off the final touch-ups, such as adding the ability to move and delete existing modules, along with a lot of debugging of course.

Life Balance: Just detailing my challenges to maintain my diet health whilst busy.

Progress

Crafting System

The end for this section is within sight! If all goes well, I think that I should wrap this up by the end of this week (knock on hardwood). Afterwards, I will start work on the “Mission Select” room. Here, players will take the different turret components they just made in the crafting section and assemble the turret for the specific level. Essentially it is choosing your load-out. Players will get information about the current level so they can choose what parts for the turret are most suitable.

Anyhow, finishing the deleting and re-placing of modules was the main task completed. All-in-all, it was not too bad but there was still some funny behavior that had to be resolved. For instance, I had some bugs where moving the modules would duplicate them (that would sure be cause a cause of EJN inflation!), or the placement grid would not reset and would just keep filling up with all of the old invisible positions from when you placed the module, ah fun times.

There still is one major section that I have to do this week, and that is displaying the UI stats for your turret based on the modules on it. Originally I had wanted all of the stats to hover beside the module you were looking at. I like the immersion and interaction this gives to players, however in reality there are so many stats that this literally covered the screen. So, I am now planning on displaying the turret's stats on a stationary computer screen behind the crafting area. This lets players more easily see everything at once. The screen will display the total number of combined stats from all the modules on it. When you hover over a placed module, its name and stats will appear on the stationary screen so you can see how it is adding to the turret as a whole.

Life Balance

It has been about two weeks since I have decided that I wanted to improve my eating habits. The first week was pretty great, but last week not so much. I discovered a whole bunch of processed foods in the apartment that I had forgotten about. I hate wasting food, so I resolved to try to finish these off, but they quickly become the dominant food again (*sigh). Worse yet, is that I stumbled across an ice cream flavor that I had been looking for over 5 years for! It did not turn out well for me, but at least I can cross an item off my bucket list haha. What is your guys' favourite guilty food?

Over the last two weeks I have been doing a lot of research on trying to eat healthy and the amount of information is really quite overwhelming. There are so many different kitchen devices, ways to cook, alternative ingredients, recipes etc, that it is really so hard to just know where to start. Thankfully, I think I am nearing the end of the overwhelm, and have mostly cleared out the processed foods. This week, I think I can finally make the change wholeheartedly!

The Paradox of Choice

The funny thing about all of this, is that cooking is one of the only non-programming things I can do in a day. So, it has kind of become somewhat of a hobby to me at this current moment in time. This was completely unintentional as I had always thought time could be better spent in the past. But now it is the only way I can really get a break that does not use my mental energy. There are certainly worse “hobbies” to have. At least this is one that I will always have to use for the rest of my life, since food is slightly necessary...
