It's been a bit, but it is finally time for another edition of eSports New Tech News!
Let's jump in!
Hyperice Joins eSports for Health
Hyperice is a company that specializes in recovery and physical therapy technology for athletes, especially those that are put under extreme physical loads. They have now turned their attention to the eSports scene!
Although eSports is vastly considered a mental sport, there are still physical tolls taken on the body by sitting prone for upwards of the 50 hours a week or more that it takes to train for the next tournament. The lower back suffers from sitting for extended periods, as do the legs. Hands and arms become sore from repetitive movements and constant clicking. It may not be as intense as taking a hit from a linebacker, but the damage is still present, and it is very real. Many gamers develop carpal tunnel and retire as early as 22 years of age.
Some of their tech can greatly benefit eSports players as much as it can the physical athlete. Their line uses vibration to alleviate muscle strain and fatigue, some even include smart monitoring. There is a belt for the lower back, a massager and roller for your legs and arms, and a large pulsating ball that is used to relieve joint pain and soreness in the hands.
It won't be long before every pro team has a set! Or at least, one can hope, for their own benefit!
Gaming App May Hint at Concussions
A new game has hit the market and its aim is to protect and ensure the safety of young (and old) athletes everywhere! It's called EQ- Active Brain Tracking and it is revolutionizing the assessments for concussions.
The way it works is that the game itself is used to build a baseline of basic brain functions like visual motor functions, different types of memory, and fine motor skills. You play for about 10-15 minutes and can "check-in" weekly or play daily. It builds a profile based on your gaming that gives a baseline of your brain functions and how you process information. You can compete with other players, if you are so inclined, as well!
Now, if you take a hit, since concussions can be very hard to diagnose immediately, they hand you the game while you are on the field. If there are changes in baseline, that is when they will send you off for care! It will be able to detect small changes in the way you process information which could hint at the possibility of a concussion.
This is a fun technological revolution that can literally save the lives of athletes everywhere!
AR to Enhance eSports Viewing
Back in 2017, the developers of a mobile game called Guns of Boom released an AR mode for spectating their competitions.
Game Insight is now partnered with the huge name, ESL, to boost the viewership of the upcoming Guns of Boom tournament. The AR spectating mode is a brand new way to watch gamers compete! It allows you to watch the game from the perspective of the player while being able to pan around the map. There will also be a second window that allows for synchronized viewing in a dual window of the commentators and their screens!
This technology could easily be implemented for all eSports events that can be watched on a mobile device and possibly even implemented into platforms such as Twitch.
Only time will tell how far this might expand from the sole game it belongs to, but I am sure they will be getting some much-needed attention from their association with the ESL!
