The Spaniard after having collected 6 podiums in his career, always missing the first place, finally manages to win the top step of the podium and win the World title, debunking what seemed now a real taboo.
Former champion Sagan rewards him.
Finally champion at 38 years played. This is the story experienced yesterday by the champion Alejandro Valverde, who in his long and glorious career has won everything. Now we can say that he really won everything, the missing piece to his trophy collection was won yesterday. And to say that Valverde had always tried, were already 6 podiums earned in the career in the cycling world.
The spell broke in Innsbruck after a race full of emotions and surprises. The Spaniard has been able to hold down the attacks of the opponents who either undermined in the second part of the race and dominated the final sprint, regulating Romain Bardet, Michael Woods and Tom Dumoulin.
Valverde enters the special ranking of the oldest world champions in history. At 38 he is the second oldest champion ever, after only the Dutch Joop Zoetemelk.
AWARD - The podium and the coronation ceremony has reserved great emotions. Valverde has freed all the tension in a moving cry. The surprise is reserved by the Slovak Peter Sagan just dethroned, after three years as a world champion, wanting to personally hand over the delivery to the new King. A great gesture of sincere sportiness, in a sport of hard work and sacrifice, in which evidently there is still space for values such as respect for their opponents. The podium was therefore unanimously applauded by the fans at the party.
AZZURRI - Disappointment for the Italian colors that have not been able to play the podium until the end. Gianni Moscon has resisted with the best as he could, but he succumbed to the last race
The fasting of Italian cyclists in the world has lasted for 10 years. We hope for a better fate for the next year.
