Today's 17th stage of the legendary Tour de France is special in several aspects:

  • it is short, 65 kilometers
  • it is steep and with three big climbs
  • the starting grid is set up like with motor races - think Formula 1 starting positions

The idea behind the starting grid is that the riders are positioned according to their overall classification. That would prevent 'banding up' of teams immediately after the start and make stage much more open.

Did it succeed? Check for yourself in this official video of the start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu8Xst0klkE

In the meantime, enjoy the race.
