The decisive events on the Spanish Grand Tour, as often happens, were on the last stages of the race. But before the final the favorites of the racers expected the so-called transit stage that was suitable for sprinters. The victory at the eighteenth stage was won by Jelle Vallays (Lotto Soudal). The situation in the general standings before the last three stages looked as follows:

The nineteenth and twentieth stages were a bunch of adnodrarian stages, as they partially passed through the territory of Andorra. The first of them was attributed by the organizers to the category of flat (!!!), despite the fact that at the end of the stage the rider had to climb to a height of 2,025 meters.

At this stage, all the most interesting events occurred at the last mountain. First, 10 kilometers to the finish line Thibaut Pino attacked from the main group, it was supported by Steven Kruijswijk and Nairo Quintana. Then the leader of the general classification, Simon Yates shifted to them, and Quintana returned to the pursuers' group to help Alejandro Valverde. However, the veteran himself was not feeling very well and Quintana was unable to help his partner in Movistar. On the last kilometers of the distance Lotto representative dropped out of the leaders group and the Frenchman took the victory. Yates brought his main pursuer a little more than one minute, Kruijswijk took place in the top three in the overall standings. In addition Enric Mas and Miguel Lopez approached the top three. The situation in the general classification before the decisive twentieth stage was as follows:

The final mountain stage of the Vuelta was a short, only 97 km long, but included the 6 category climbs.

In the course of the stage, different riders have committed many attacks, and the main events occurred on the last two ascents. For 17 kilometers to the finish line Miguel Lopez attacked from the main group trying to take place in the top three in the overall standings and Nairo Quintana, who went in this brake as a "policeman", defending the position of Alejandro Valverde. Then Enric Mas and Simon Yates shifted to the leading duet, but the quartet did not last long, at the beginning of the finish rise, Quintana dropped out of the group of leaders, and then two young riders attacked: Mas and Lopez. Yates did not respond to their attack deciding to go to the climb at a convenient pace for him. In the group of pursuers Alejandro Valverde tried to defend his second position, but failed to do so, losing to Mas and Lopez a little more than three minutes. The victory at the stage was scored by Enrique Mas, who outstripped his partner in the finish spurt. The situation in the general classification after the twentieth stage:

At the last stage, traditionally finishing in Madrid, the victory was won by Elia Vivani, probably the best sprinter of the season, and no changes were occurred in the general classification. Thus, the winner of the Vuelta - in 2018 was Simon Yates, who managed to be rehabilitated after the failure in the last stages of the Giro.
