Four-time Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton has extended the contract with Mercedes for two years. The previous contract of the 33-year-old Briton with this team was in force until the end of 2018.
The prolongation of this contract was basically a formality. It was good to finally settle these formalities and announce it, because we can continue normal work. For 20 years I have been part of the Mercedes racing family and have never been happier than now. We're all on the same wavelengths, both on and off the track, "said Hamilton quoted in an official statement.
No financial details were given, but according to British press speculation, the new contract is worth 52 million dollars a year.
Hamilton is the current Formula 1 world champion. He previously triumphed in 2015, 2014 and 2008. After 10 out of 21 races this season it takes second place in the general classification. He loses eight points to the leading German Sebastian Vettel. On Sunday drivers will compete at the Hockenheim circuit in the German Grand Prix.
