On Friday, August 2nd, 1996, the Netherlands defeated Spain 3-1 in the gold medal game to win the 18th gold medal in Olympic men’s field hockey history. It was the first gold medal for the Netherlands in Olympic men’s field hockey. Spain took the silver medal with the loss, claiming their second silver medal in Olympic men’s field hockey. Australia defeated Germany 3-2 in the bronze medal game, grabbing their second bronze medal in Olympic men’s field hockey history.

The tournament was held in the United States, with Atlanta as the host city. Taco van den Honert (pictured above) of the Netherlands and Greg Nicol of South Africa tied for most goals scored in the tournament with seven each.
