It was a reunion of of hostilities that dates back to the early millennium when Netherlands faced off with Czech Republic in their knockout stage encounter in Budapest.
The Czech Republic for the umpteenth time got one over a Dutch side that was reduced to 10 men five minutes before the hour mark, when Juventus defender, Mathijs De Ligt was sent off for handling the ball, after a tussle with Czech striker, Patrik Schick.
Tomas Holes was first to slice the Dutch fence open after scoring with a header at the far post. Then, he turned provider moments later after breaking through the Netherlands defence to assist Patrik Schick, who scored at Martin Skeltenburg's near post.
Czech Republic have now set up a date with Denmark in the quarterfinal in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Here are three things we learnt.
*1. Promising Dutch wither
After the group stages, the Netherlands began to appear as one of the favorites for the tournament after a perfect start in the three games, winning all three, scoring eight goals and conceding just two.
Frank De Boer's side became the first side in the history of the European championship to gain all maximum points in the group stage and then lose out in regular duration in the knockout stage since 2008. Coincidentally, the last side to do same was the Dutch national team.
The loss also puts to bed their 10-game unbeaten run at a major tournaments a run that dates back to Euro 2012.
Were you disappointed by Netherlands' performance?
2. Czech Republic cruising
Over the years, the Czech Republic national team has never been one with too many stars at a time, but their history at major tournaments, the European championship especially is highly commendable.
For a start, this is their fourth quarterfinal qualification in their last seven appearances at the European championship. Impressive, you can say.
It also seems like they love to play the Netherlands. They have won in their last two meetings with the Dutch side, both coming in qualifiers for European championships. In fact, they have won five out of their last seven meetings with the Le Oranje.
Do you think the Czech Republic can be a surprise package?
3. Schick Holes
If not taking a close look, one would easily mistake Tomas Holes for a striker. First because of his positioning and adventurous runs into the opposition box and secondly, he wears the number 9 shirt.
A defensive midfielder, he put in a man-of-the-match performance. First, opening scoring and then providing an assist. He becomes the first player after Jann Koller and Milan Baros to both score and assist in the same match in a European championship match.
Patrik Schick on his part continues his push for the Euro 2020 golden boot and with Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the leading goalscorer out, Schick may continue to fancy his chances.
He will also be looking to match and possibly surpass Milan Baros' five-goal record for Czech Republic at the European championships, the highest by any Czech player .
Also to remember is that, his goal against Wales from almost the centre of the pitch is a contender for goal of the tournament.
Can Schick overtake Ronaldo?
