Divock Origi was the star of the day when Liverpool scrapped to a 1-0 victory over Wolves at the Molineux on Saturday as the Belgian scored in the final minutes of additional time to send Liverpool faithful into wild jubilations.
In a close-ended game that almost looked like both teams would settle for a point each, came in Origi as a substitute to win all three points for the Reds.
Ruben Neves missed Wolves' game against Burnley due to suspension and returned to the starting lineup, replacing his compatriot and fellow midfielder, Joao Mourinho as the only change to Bruno Lage's side.
Jurgen Klopp has always been averse to the packed schedule of the Premier League, especially in the close year, however, he made no change to his team from midweek.
The Reds started brightly as expected, but the chances were far and in between, and they went close in the 28th minute when Thiago Alcantara sent a ball over the Wolves defence to release Trent Alexander Arnold, who was unable to guide his effort on target.
Four minutes later, the combination of both worked again to open up the Wolves defence as Alexander Arnold sent a cross to the far post where Diogo Jota was arriving, but his header was well wide of the target.
The restart was no better as both teams struggled to find a goal, despite Liverpool being the better side. Mohamed Salah connected on a half volley with a corner and the ball found its way to Alcantara, but the Spaniard could not hit a clean shot at goal.
A huge let off for the hosts 10 minutes later when Roman Saiss and Jose Sa mixed things up at the back, allowing Jota pounce. The former Wolves player raced down on an empty net only to fire his shot straight at Conor Coady, one of the two players who were standing on the line.
With the game seemingly heading towards a barren draw, Salah stepped up to set up Origi for a late dramatic win. The Egyptian got the ball from deep and found himself behind the Wolves defence, before cutting the ball back to Origi, who was backing the post, but hit the shot on the turn with his left foot to win the game for Liverpool and send Klopp into animation mode.
Concluding Thoughts
Liverpool would have bitten themselves hard had they not taken advantage of the slip earlier in the day by Chelsea, who lost 3-2 at West Ham. They now sit in second position having occupied the first spot for a few hours before Manchester City overtook them with their own win over Watford.
Having kept three straight clean sheets in their last three Premier League games, Wolves will feel undone after that last minute lack of concentration that not only cost them their clean sheet, but all three points.
