Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi has once again put his name in the records book as Barcelona romped PSV Eindoven in one of the early kickoff games of the new Champions League season at the Camp Nou.

Messi completed a hatrick along with a strike from young French attacker, Ousmane Dembele to give Barcelona a 4-0 victory.

Scoring the first goal of this season's Champions League, Messi hit a sublime direct free kick into the top corner from about 25 yards out past goalkeeper, Joreon Zoet.

The Argentine captain has now scored a record 8 Champions League hatrick, surpassing his fiercest rival, Cristiano Ronaldo with whom he was formerly tied on 7.

The five-time World Player of the year has also scored more Champions League goals (103) than their opponent on the night PSV who have score 102 goals.

Apart from scoring the first goal of the season, the strike means the Argentine becomes only the second player in history to score in 14 consecutive Champions League seasons.

The 31-year old has now scored his fifth direct free kick in 2018, a record he now holds.

Messi who is a product of Barcelona's La Masia, has scored a total of 25 direct free kicks for the Catalan club in the past five seasons, at least, 10 more than any other player in all of Europe's top five leagues (in all competitions).
