"No Allardyce Paradise" were the concluding words of the commentator on Sunday night as West Bromwich Albion confirmed their return to the Championship after just one campaign in the top-flight .

The Baggies, although were deep in the relegation waters, needed a win to at least postpone their relegation from the premier league.

Arsenal coming on the back of their exit in the Europa League at the hands of Villareal needed something to lift their spirits and, perhaps, keep alive their very slim hopes of a place in Europe next season, should they finish in the top seven.

West Brom knowing the huge task ahead got to work from the blast, trying to unsettle their hosts, but it was Arsenal who got the first breeze at goal in the 6th minute.

Dani Ceballos played Bukayo Saka free on the left flank and the Hale End graduate fired in a low cross which was not well cleared by the West Brom defence, allowing Gabriel Martinelli return the ball back into the danger area, but Nicholas Pepe could only manage to steer his quick effort wide off goal.

The visitors responded swiftly with Matheus Pereira leading the charge. He was presented with two opportunities in the space of two minutes just before the quarter hour mark, but the Brazilian could only Manger to drag both efforts wide.

Arsenal would punish their visitors for those missed chances.

A well-worked move started by Emile Smith Rowe found Bukayo Saka on the left flank on the 29th minute. Saka, who had been mesmerizing the Baggies' defence all night, steered in a mid-level cross whic was superbly attacked by Smith Rowe with the outside of his left foot and beyond Sam Johnstone. Smith Rowe finally got his first premier league goal. Well deserving for the industrious lad.

Nicholas Pepe would compound West Brom's woes just six minutes later. The Ivorian received a clearing ball from Calum Chambers on the right side of attack. Allowed too much room, he switched the ball to his more comfortable left foot and powered a fierce left-footed effort into the top corner.

It was like Arsenal were looking to vent the anger of their cup exit on West Brom as they continued pressing for more goals. Chambers ballooned an effort from the edge of the box on the 42nd minute before Johnstone had to be on guard to deny Saka at the near post on the stroke of half time.

The second half started with Johnstone having to make two crucial saves in succession, denying Pepe his second of the night on the 49th minute, before working to save Smith Rowe's effort on the 51st minute.

Never write off a wounded dog. West Brom needed just one goal to be back in the game and rightly so, they got one on the 66th minute.

Pereira, who has been a bright light for them in their struggle to avoid the drop made a fine solo run, running the length of the pitch before lashing a low effort into the right corner. Poor defending from Arsenal, Ceballos a big culprit, chasing the Brazilian up till the edge of the box and then allowing him time to pick a spot.

The comeback should have been complete and postpone West Brom's relegation by at least 24 hours when on the 73rd minute, Darnell Furlong could not direct his header from a Matt Philips cross towards goal.

The nail was on the coffin on the 90th minute. Willian win a free kick a few meters away from the West Brom box. From the resulting free kick, the Brazilian, who had been much criticized for most of the campaign, lifted a sublime free kick beyond the wall and into the top corner for his first goal in an Arsenal shirt, since his move from Chelsea over the summer.

The win was the first time Arsenal were recording a back-to-back win since January 2021 which takes them into four points behind the last Europa league spot and three matches to spare.

The Baggies have now be relegated for the fifth time in the top flight. This is the first time Sam Allardyce will be relegated from the premier league after previously successfully saved clubs like Sunderland and Crystal Palace from the drop.
