Tottenham Hotspur are really pushing their luck for a place in the Champions League next season and at least a place in Europe, following their 2-0 home victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday which leaves them five points off the top four with two games to go.
The North London side cruised to victory courtesy of goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
The home team are looking to push for a last minute spot in a season that has seen them sack Jose Mourinho and lost a cup final, against a Wolves side that has won on their last two visits and secured 10 out 15 possible points in their last five games.
Spurs expectedly started with the most intent and should have gotten an opener in the 8th minute after Wolves lost the ball in a dangerous position; close to their box. Hojbjerg released Kane who fires a low shot in to the bottom corner, but was denied by the poll, allowing the visitors to clear.
The game saw little goal-mouth action and the next opportunity fell to Spurs again on the 38th minute. This time, the deadly duo of Harry Kane and Heung Min Son combining.
A flicked on header from the Englishman released his South Korean teammate who made Rui Patricio work hard to make a save. The Portugese shot-stopper spilled on the first catch, but was able to gather on the second attempt.
With the passage of time, Spurs grew more threatening and the visitors will have Conor Coady to thank as he made two vital blocks with just two minutes of the first half to go.
A corner deep into the Wolves penalty area was well met by Kane who looked to have fould Rui Patricio, but his effort was cleared on the line by Coady. Not fully save, Giovanni Lo Celso sent a return ball towards the near post, but the England defender was alert again to spot the danger.
Wolves' resilience was finally broken on the stroke of half time and who else but the usual culprit, Harry Kane.
The England striker managed to stay onside, before taking a pass from Hojbjerg in his strides, beating Coady and then firing home beyond Patricio. It was Kane's 22nd league goal of the campaign which leaves him joint-top of the scorers' chart along with Mohammed Salah.
Wolves returned after the interval and didn't look dangerous but almost got their equalizer on the 52nd minute. The header from Roman Saiss, after getting between two Spurs players, was too weak to trouble Hugo Lloris who gathered comfortably.
The only barrier between Tottenham and their next goal proved to be the post. On the 54th minute, Tottenham broke away quickly on the counter and Kane finds himself in a shooting range, which he takes brilliantly, but his effort came off the post. The rebound fell to Dele Alli, who has found joy and playing time again under interim manager, Ryan Mason, but his effort also comes off the post. What hardluck.
The eventual would not be denied as the hosts finally got their second, eight minutes later.
It was a good work from Sergio Reguilon to win the ball on the corner flag off Ki-Jana Hoever, who was trying to guide it out safely. The Real Madrid loanee picked his pocket and found Son, who placed the ball for Gareth Bale on the edge of the box to take a shot. Bale's shot was parried by Patricio but only as far as Hojbjerg who was on hand to score from close range.
It's now three wins at home for interim boss, Ryan Mason who becomes the first Spurs manager since Harry Redknapp in 2008 to win his first three home games as Tottenham got back to winning ways and deservedly so, having played 24 shots in the game, 13 of which were on target.
