The 21-year old, who was scouted by other top clubs joins the North London outfit as their first summer signing and is reported to have cost the Gunners around £8 million.

In his first official interview with the club, he said he was first notified of Arsenal's interest by his agent at the end of last season and he was excited, then spoke with his mum about it.

Asked which players he admires at the club, the young left-back pointed at Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka, and also mentioned that from past, he used to like club legend, Thierry Henry.

Tavares broke into the Benfica first team in 2019 and has gone ahead to make 41 appearances for the Portugese giants in all competitions, scoring just once and making seven assists.

Arsenal were left short at left-back last season following several injuries to first choice left-back, Kieran Tierney and the loan departure of Sead Kolasinac, with Granit Xhaka and Cedric Soares having to fit in there at times. The arrival of Tavares will be a good cover in that position.

It is obvious that this signing is one for the future, as also mentioned by Technical Director, Edu, who sees the youngster as part of the Arsenal future.
