With the constant negativity surrounding manager José Mourinho and his persistent tantrums ruling the roost, it's easy to forget that United have actually splashed £70m in cash so far.

Brazilian midfielder Fred has arrived, along with talented Portuguese prospect Diogo Dalot. The Red Devils need more though, and with transfer deadline day upon us, here are five players that United should be trying to get over deal's over the line for.

#5. Ousmane Dembele

One area of potential weakness for United is on the right wing, an area that Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele could certainly improve.

The Frenchman is enduring a difficult spell in Spain after struggling to justify the whopping €105m fee (rising to €145m) that Barça forked out for his services - prompting rumours of a move away from the Catalan giants.

He has pace, trickery, flamboyance and an eye for goal - attributes that are sure to interest José Mourinho. Don't rule out a shocking deadline day loan deal for the World Cup winner.

#4. Harry Maguire

It's been the story of the summer - who will the Red Devils snap up to lead their defensive line next season?

A host of names have been mentioned over the course of the summer, though a move for Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is now seemingly off the table.

Enter Leicester and England star Harry Maguire. The 25-year-old enjoyed a superb World Cup campaign, seeing his stock significantly rise as a result - United have been linked with a huge £75m bid, though the Foxes remain desperate to keep hold of their prized asset.

#3. Ivan Perisic

Another standout performer at this summer's World Cup was Inter's Croatian winger Ivan Perisic.

The 29-year-old was prominently linked with a move to Old Trafford last summer, though talk of a move to England has recently died down. He proved this summer that he is a class act though, scoring the crucial equaliser against England to swing Croatia's World Cup semi-final in their favour.

He operates mainly on the left hand side, but his devastating finishing ability and fearsome left foot could see him deployed on the right wing.

#2. Sergej Milinković-Savić

Another long-term transfer target is Lazio's midfield enforcer, Sergej Milinković-Savić.

The Serbian star is one of the highest rated commodities in the game right now, with Real Madrid and Juventus both linked with big money moves for the 23-year-old.

#1. Toby Alderweireld

And finally, the one that United really need to get over the line.

It's been one of the more protracted transfer chases in modern times, but fans will be hoping Toby Alderweireld will make the long awaited switch from Tottenham to Man Utd.

The Belgian defender has suffered with injury problems recently, but his composure and defensive qualities rank him among the best in the world.

Spurs' valuation of Alderweireld has held the deal up for many, many months but it seems a breakthrough has been made, with the Belgian surely hopeful that his move to Old Trafford will finally go through.

If and when it does, you can guarantee that with Spurs involved, it will go right to the wire on Deadline Day.
