All fifteen Halls of residence, Distance Education as well as City Campus will participate in the 55th UG Inter-Hall games which commence on Monday, September 10 and ends on Friday, October 12, 2018 on all the fields and courts of UG.
Disciplines
The participating teams will compete for the coveted trophies in Badminton, Basketball (women), Cross Country, Football, Goalball, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Table Tennis and Volleyball.
Team Preparation
Akuafo Hall, champions in the 2017/2018 Inter-Hall Games will be relishing defending its trophy right from the onset. The Sports Secretary, Richard Bannor retorted that most of their athletes are still around to continue their impressive run in the Inter-Hall Games.
“We are fortunate to have most of our athletes around. We have also made contact with some of the beneficiaries of the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) who will augment the team for this academic year and also help sustain our strategic plan of what we call the “Akuafo succession planning in sports participation.”
Other rivals such as Mensah Sarbah, Commonwealth/Volta and Legon Hall would want to win their first games to send a message of intent that they are no push overs. Same can be said of the Halls in the diaspora as well as the satellite campuses who have some athletes with the experience to challenge the ‘big Halls.’
What’s New and Expectations ahead of Games
The 55th Inter-Hall Games will see the return of male football after seven years of it been played in a league format. The Head Coach Mr. Henry Sackey remarked that due to lack of training time for the University Football male team which has affected the performance of the team in recent times, the format had to change.
“Unlike the basketball league where the School team can train under floodlight on the courts, with football, it is quite difficult with the current facilities we have. It is our hope and belief that this format will afford the team to train more to be able to bond better.”
Mr. Sackey, also the Volleyball Coach gave an insight on what to expect from the competition and how it will have a snowball effect on the school team.
“We have admitted talented and experienced sportsmen and women who are equally good to replace those who completed school at the end of 2017/2018 academic year. Through this competition, we will be able to put the teams in much more better position to win laurels ahead of the Bilateral Games in University of Ibadan in October and the Mini-Ghana Universities Sports Association Games in January 2019.”
The University through the University of Ghana Policy on the Admission of Athlete Students (UG-PAAS) has admitted talented sportsmen and women across all the disciplines. In addition, some continuing student and freshers’ have received scholarship packages via the University of Ghana Sport Fund. These support programmes should be one of several motivating instruments for the athletes to excel on the fields and courts.
