The defending champions of the Premier League have not been lucky with the health of their defenders this season. During the first eight Premier League matches, Liverpool have had to see starters like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold go out with injuries. In addition, defensive midfielder and substitute Fabinho is also incompetent due to an injury that has kept the Brazilian out since October.

Wednesday afternoon hurt so much worse for Liverpool as Sky Sport were able to report that the club's first choice in van Dijk's absence, Joe Gomez, has been injured for Wednesday's early training with the English national team. The English Football Association has not yet commented on the episode. A serious injury to the young Englishman could mean that Liverpool have Joel Matip as the only battle-ready central defense with more than a few Premier League matches on his name.

Due to the many injuries in defense, Joe Gomez has played all but one league game for "The Reds" this season, where Liverpool have collected the third most goals of all in the Premier League with 16 goals. The defending champions currently occupy third place in the top English tier one point behind Leicester and one point ahead of Tottenham.

The only positive news for Liverpool's defense is that Fabinho is probably ready to pull on the red shirt again shortly after the national team break, while Trent Alexander-Arnold is also expected to return before the end of the year
