Shell Helix Cup

Result: Kaizer Chiefs 1-2 Mamelodi Sundowns

Date: 21 July 2018

Venue: FNB Stadium

Jeremy Brockie netted his first goal in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns as they defeated Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 in the Shell Helix Cup on Saturday afternoon.

The Brazilians started at a high pace as they went in search of an early goal but they lacked cohesion going forward.

The Amakhosi were under pressure in the first quarter of an hour but were a threat on counter-attacks with the speed of Khama Billiat.

However, the Soweto giants troops were struggling to combine going forward after half-an-hour and were largely playing second fiddle to Masandawana, especially in the midfield.

Gaston Sirino and Anthony Laffor were Sundowns' liveliest players in the first half but they were let down by their decision-making in the final third.

Billiat should have got the breakthrough goal for Amakhosi two minutes before the break but shot-stopper Kennedy Mweene made a good save to clear the Zimbabwean's effort off the line.

Jeremy Brockie broke the deadlock for the Brazilians eight minutes after the break with a close range finish after Anthony Laffor’s shot came off the post.

Leonardo Castro almost equalised for Amakhosi with an acrobatic overhead kick inside the box two minutes after the hour but Mweene was well positioned to get under the strike.

The Glamour Boys were a much improved side with 20 minutes left to play, threatening to level matters on set-plays.

Patrick Mabedi introduced the likes of Teenage Hadebe, Bernard Park and Ryan Moon, while Pitso Mosimane threw on new signing Toni Silva, Themba Zwane and Hlompho Kekana.

It was Zwane who sealed the match for the Brazilians in stoppage time with an exquisite side-footed shot into the top corner.

Parker managed to get a consolation goal for Chiefs deep in stoppage time with a free header inside the box, but it was too little too late as Sundowns held on for the win.
