Chelsea scored two late goals in the Carabao Cup against Brentford to reach their third major semi-final under Thomas Tuchel.

Thomas Tuchel's selection plans were disrupted by Covid-19 which prompted him to give debut starts for three teenagers. But Brentford was the more threatening side before halftime forcing Chelsea's goalie Kepa Arrizabalaga to three crucial saves that would have given them leeway in the match. Chelsea kept probing and dominating possession but nothing to show for it, it was the introduction of the likes of Jorginho, Madon Mount, Pulisic, Reece James, and Ngolo Kante that gave Chelsea the much-needed lifeline.

Reece James' well-struck cross was inadvertently pushed into the back of the net by Brentford defender Pontus Jansson to give Chelsea the much-deserved lead in the 80' minutes. Chelsea upped the tempo and was rewarded five minutes later when Christian Pulisic was brought down in the area by Brentford goalie Fernandez which the resulting spot-kick was scored by Jorginho to put Chelsea in the last four of the competition.

Chelsea will take on Tottenham in a two-legged semi-final with the first of the semis taking place on the 3rd of January, 2022.
