Toothless, lethargic and woeful. Real Madrid produce an uninspiring display as they lose 3-0 to a resilient CSKA Moscow team.

Unimportant would be a silly excuse if Real Madrid decide to use it to justify their unimpressive performance tonight against CSKA Moscow.

Although Solari set out with much of the B team players, there was enough talent on the pitch to at least score a goal or win the three points.

Below are the player ratings

Thubiat Courtois: 5

The Belgian was preferred between the sticks to Keylor Navas. Although he had no fault in the three goals conceded, he was much of a spectator in the match and when he was called upon, he looked shaky. A five is fair enough for the Belgian

Alvaro Odriozola 2

I wish I could give the young Spaniard a lower rating but I am leaving it at 2 to give him a tap on the back for completing the 90 minutes.

The inexperience of the young Spaniard was laid bare for all to see that he is no where close to bringing to the team half of what Carvajal provides. His decision making was poor, his attacking movements and connection with the attackers was on a very poor level.

It is apparent he still needs nurturing on the attacking end of the pitch. Defensively, he did okay as the Russian team targeted the opposite flank most.

Jesus Vallejo 5

Defended well, snuffed out attacks but was expected to be well positioned to block the second goal. Not much at fault for the three goals conceded, the young Spaniard is also a work-in-progress.

Javi Sanchez 4

Called up by Solari from the Castilla team to partner Vallejo in the defence. Looked solid at first but his inexperience was laid bare for the first goal as he was slow to read the movements of the Moscow's striker Chalov, before he scored. His connection with Marcelo and the midfield was also not impressive but he looks like he will get better with more game time with the senior men.

Marcelo 4

Marcelo was torally a shadow of his real self tonight, little wonder he was taken off for Carvajal. Back from injury, Solari looked to gift the Brazilian game time to keep him fresh for the weekend game. Marcelo was sluggish tracking down defenders and surprisingly had little effect in the attacking third. His central run before the first goal was the worst decision I have seen Marcelo make and it is no surprise his flank was targeted time without number by the Moscow men.

Marcos Llorente 6

A good replacement for Casemiro. Marcos did what he knows to do best, snuffing out attacks, pouncing on opponents unexpectedly and intercepting plays. The only justifying decisions to take him out for Toni Kroos was to rest him for the weekend game or injury. Anything other than these, Solari deserves to be sacked for taking the Spaniard out. The only major fault Marcos had and always has is his decision making with the ball. Times when he is expected to progress play, he instead opts for the back pass.

A year or two with the veterans in the team will no doubt help him correct his flaws and perfect his game.

Fede Valverde 5

The youngster is the only B player in the team bar Vinicius that is matured on the ball and looked impressive. His ability to read and intercept passes coupled with his passing ability, the future is already looking bright for the young man.

Fransisco Alarcon 5

Isco was expected to be a passing outlet in the middle of the pitch for the team, instead he was seen drifting from flank to flank. With no player in the middle, CSKA Moscow were okay watching Real Madrid spread passes from flank to flank provided they don't get into their 18 yard box. Faded as the match wore on and was only left on the pitch because of the nature of the game.

Marco Asensio 6

One of the bright stars of Real Madrid tonight. Played with intent and confidence, knew what was desired of them and helped push the opponent's defence back. Hit the woodwork once and missed a glorious chance.

Vinicius Junior 6

Just like Asensio, the young Brazilian created more danger on the left flank and was a thorn in the hearts of the CSKA Moscow team all through the 90 minutes. Vincius needs to work on his decision making as he played unecessary shots and looked to dribble when he should have passed. A good performance from the Brazilian.

Karim Benzema 4

An uninspiring performance from the French man. Drifted mostly to the left flank, abandoning his striking duties to the CSKA Moscow defenders. Combined well with Vinicius but lacked the experience needed to break the resilient Russian defence.

Substitutes

Gareth Bale 4

Brought on for Benzema at half time but looked to regret been summoned as he picked up an injury way into the second half. Continued the match but was lost for the remainder of the game.

Toni Kroos 5

Brought on for Marcos Llorente, improved the midfield play of the team as he did Kroos things. Quite unfortunate to be coming on when Real were chasing a goal or two and ended up conceiving another.

Just as expected, Real Madrid approached this game like it really was, unimportant. Setting out young, vibrant and hungry players to go hunting, they ended up being the hunted though. Losing to the same team after two legged ties and not scoring a single goal shows there is still much work to be done by Solari.
