The damaged team bus

The person responsible for the explosive attack on Borussia Dortmund team bus has finally been condemned to 14years in prison by a German court. The convicted was arrested ten days after the incident.

The convicted aged, twenty-eight (28) years old is German-Russia citizen and was simply identified as Sergej Wenergold, was charged to court on charges bordering on attempted murder and was finally sentenced into prison after an 11 month old trial in the court. A number of the team players which include Marc Batra and there then manager Tomas Tuchel who is now at Paris Saint-Germain also testify during the trial.

You will recall that on the 11th of April 2017, Dortmund team bus was hit by explosion three (3) times, while conveying the team players and coaches to Westfalenstaion, the venue of their UEFA champion’s league quarter final match against the Monaco team from France.

Injured in the attack on that day was former Barcelona central defender Marc Batra, who was wounded on his by the broken window glass. He was rushed to the hospital immediately. A police officer attached to the team also suffered a non-fatal injury. Casualty was however not recorded.

The attack was initially thought to have been carried out by the popular Islamic terrorist group, the ISIS. To protest against the continuous military intervention of Germany, in the Middle East country of Syria and Iraq.

The suspect who later admitted to planting the explosive on the route the team bus will be plying, said it was just to cause panic and not to kill or murder people. He apologized while in court last week expressing his regret for the damage caused.

The match was later cancelled and shifted to the following day, Wednesday 12th of April 2017. The match ended 3-2 in favor of Monaco with the now Barcelona player Ousman Dembele and Shinji Kagawa scoring for the home team Dortmund and young Kylian Mbappe scoring twice for Monaco with Bender diverting a cross past his own goalkeeper to score an own goal. Dotmund was eventually knock out with a score line of 6-3.
