What's a buckle fracture, anyway?

#GOHAWKS!! the brainwashing is complete!
Buckle fractures are compression fractures and are very common in children. They happen when one side of the bone buckles, or bends, but doesn't break all the way through.

I Broke My Baby

Remember how in my previous posts I was all, 'let them play! let them get dirty and hurt!! It's goooooood for them!!'

Well. Then my baby broke (I didn't have anything to do with it, for the record) and two days later, my OTHER baby fell super hard and we ended up at the emergency room AGAIN and for a minute there I thought maybe having a stagnant and bubble-wrapped life wasn't quite so bad of an idea.

that's not blood, it's paint I SWEAR

He had been playing soccer at school, fell backwards and bend his hand backwards towards his forearm, resulting in a buckle fracture. He'll be in a cast for another two weeks.

She had been playing after Capoeira, tripped and fell HARD on the concrete, spraining her elbow. I think she was just a teeeeeensy bit upset she wasn't going to get a cast, to be honest.

Conclusion

Call me crazy, but I hold to my previous declaration. I'd still rather have them run and play and learn how to fall with grace; how to get back up and keep trying than hinder them and keep them 'safe'. Even though emergency rooms are really kind of terrifying and sad places.

So there you go! Sports hurt! Play anyway!
