The second match day of the Premier League delivered some impressive results as well as some disappointments. Here is what happened this weekend in England’s top tier.

Cardiff City 0-0 Newcastle United

Newcastle United finished the game with one man down as Isaac only lasted 20 minutes after being introduced at half-time. However, they could have snatched a win but Kenedy missed from the spot deep into stoppage time. The Bluebirds remain the only team with no goals scored after two games.

Everton 2-1 Southampton

Everton fans have high hopes for the season as the team made some fantastic signings in the summer. One of them, Brazilian winger Richarlison, scored the third goal of the season to help his team beat poor Southampton at Goodison Park. The team could be a threat to any opponent once all new players pick up the form and merge into the squad.

Leicester City 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Leicester City loss at Old Trafford felt like underachievement and the team proved it by beating Wolves at home despite Jamie Vardy red card on the 66th minute.

Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 Fulham

Spurs might need to continue playing at Wembley for a few more months but they won’t be sorry about it if they continue their impressive run at the main English stadium. This time around they beat promoted Fulham, while Harry Kane finally managed to score in August.

West Ham United 1-2 Bournemouth

Manuel Pellegrini certainly needs time to make all new signings work as a unit but questions are already raised after the club spent 100 million pounds this summer and stay at the bottom of the table after two games. Bournemouth, on the opposite, play with the same set of players and bear the fruits of their stability.

Chelsea 3-2 Arsenal

The London derby between Chelsea and Arsenal delivered exactly what people love football for. Plenty of goals, entertaining attacks, a comeback and late climax. On top of that were high expectations from new managers Maurizio Sarri and Unai Emery as both teams are still adapting to the new ideas and tactics. Chelsea stunned the Gunners from the very start of the game and took a two-goal lead by the 20th minute as Pedro and Alvaro Morata punished the visitors for playing with a very high defensive line. However, Arsenal responded with two goals from minutes 37 to 41 courtesy of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Alex Iwobi strikes. Yet, the Blues claimed the victory with 10 minutes to go as Marcos Alonso netted a goal from Eden Hazard assist. It seems like Chelsea still have plenty of room to improve once they embrace all ideas of Maurizio Sarri, while Arsenal still can’t find a balance playing from the back, something they were punished for in the first two games. Curiously, there were no English players on the pitch in the final 30 minutes of the game following the substitution of Ross Barkley.

Burnley 1-3 Watford

Watford continue to impress as they earn the second straight win at Turf Moor despite selling their best player Richarlison to Everton in the summer. Burnley seem a little distracted by Europa League qualification.

Manchester City 6-1 Huddersfield Town

The champions beat Arsenal comfortably on the opening night and made a statement against Huddersfield Town at Etihad. No team has won back-to-back titles since Sir Alex Ferguson but City issued a warning to all doubters as they thrashed the visitors. Sergio Aguero netted a hat-trick, Gabriel Jesus and David Silva also got on the score sheet, while Leroy Sane pushed Terence Kongolo for an own goal. However, it was not the number of goals scored but rather the fluidity of Manchester City performance and the ease of penetration into opponent’s third and the box. Also, they have some of the most powerful benches out there and can use rotation without losing any quality so they could compete in all tournaments. Huddersfield, in their turn, will be happy to forget the start of the season and move on.

Brighton & Hove Albion 3-2 Manchester United

Premier League is no place for miracles and only the blind did not see Manchester United downfall coming after that poor pre-season and the never-ending negativity coming from Jose Mourinho. He never stayed more than three years at a club in his career and his departure from Old Trafford is now just a matter of time. Brighton are the greatest Premier League team and their performance was never good enough to score three goals. Yet they somehow managed to do that against United, who were as bad defensively as they could get. The midfield just did not work the way it should be and up front there was no chemistry between players as Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku did not make a single pass to each other in the entire game. There was nothing the team was good at and it seems like they will have a hard time this season.

Five teams are level at the top of the table on six points. Crystal Palace host Liverpool on Monday night and one of them could join the leading group. Manchester City impressed the most but Arsenal and Manchester United struggled this weekend. Follow the action as Spurs pay a visit to Old Trafford next Monday, while Arsenal and West Ham will try to earn their first points at the Emirates!
