Growing up dreaming of football coming home and with each World Cup becoming more and more disappointed with England we have no come to a year when the expectations are actually rather low. The squad is on the young side and doesn’t really have any huge “superstar” players like we have in years gone by. I think this could actually be a very good thing, as they haven’t been hyped up and I am hoping this actually creates a good England team. We haven’t really seen a very good England team for a long time now as always built up around certain players David Beckham and Wayne Rooney come to mind. Also with the debate of can Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard play together in the same team?
We have none of that this year and instead have some exciting players with a young captain Spurs Striker Harry Kane leading the line, he has been outstanding over the past two seasons leading from the front for Spurs and I am very much hoping he can do the same for England. Around him we have more exciting and potentially very good players in Raheem Sterling and Dele Ali both have had impressive campaigns in the Premier League. Sterling winning it with Man City, I for one hope he can get the press to actually right nice things about him by doing the business on the pitch.
England have been pushing and working towards the England DNA for quite a few years now looking to get players to stay on the ball, something each and every age group playing for England look to do both male and female. It certainly is big forward steps and must be shown that the young age groups have done very well at recent tournaments. It has a purpose now and let’s hope this World Cup is the first place to really showcase that by actually having a team and not just a couple of world class players.
I am now feeling pretty excited to see what the first game will bring and hoping to see the three lions start with a nice win. It is refreshing heading into a tournament as outsiders really as England are currently ranked 12th in the world, so basically all they can do is prove everyone wrong. Would be fantastic to see a team willing to fight and battle for each other!
