Real Madrid, who had not won their last two in the league, took on the league's 15th place, Deportivo Alaves. 'Los Blancos' needed a victory to pick up the leaders Real Sociedad and Atletico Madrid, who before the first whistle were six points ahead of the royal club in 4th place.

However, the capital club had to look far for the three points from the start of the match. After four minutes, Alaves were awarded a penalty. A corner kick hit central defender Laguardia, who uncovered could head the ball across the small field. The ball fell on Real Madrid defender Nacho's arm and the referee whistled for a penalty kick. Alaves striker Lucas Perez took advantage of the stone-safe kick from the 11-meter spot and sent his team to 1-0.

The one-goal lead was not enough for the visitors, and midway through the first half, goal scorer Lucas Perez was sent off in a free-kick. Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, however, got his revenge from the penalty kick when Perez alone against the Belgian tried to lob the ball over him. Courtois stood upright and could easily wave the ball to the corner kick.

Real Madrid pressed for an equalizer throughout the rest of the first half, and in the 39th minute Kroos got a double chance after a nice re-pressure from substitute Rodrygo. Alaves goalkeeper Fernando Pacheco, however, kept the ball out of the goal and the visitors from the Basque Country could go to the break with a 1-0 lead.

The many Real Madrid chances did not scare Alaves, and after 49 minutes, striker Joselu brought the visitors to 2-0. Courtois tried to play a ball out of the box, but Joselu had read the pass. He intercepted the ball kicked it in empty goal.

The comfortable lead meant Alaves stood a little further back on the field and opted for conversions. It paid off when Lucas Perez and Joselu in the 63rd and 69th minutes, respectively, each got a great chance for change, which they did not manage to displace for another goal.

Real Madrid pressed for a late equalizer, and in the last attack of the match, Isco tried from distance. From the left side of the field, he curled the ball towards the long corner. However, the ball hit the crossbar and the victory was a reality for Alaves. The three points mean that Alaves moves up to 9th place, while Real Madrid stays in 4th place in LaLiga.
