Real Madrid

This is a very interesting question especially when you look at how Real Madrid have performed this season and the results they have gotten and compare that with the teams, most especially Barca, and how they have performed. But before that, let’s take a brief look at what happened in their loss against Sociedad.

It has is no news about Real Madrid’s poor performances and results this season, that has seen them revert back to the hands of their legend (Zidane) who not only won titles for the club but broke the champions league record for consecutive winnings. This season has been filled with lots of ups and downs for the Los Blancos and has seen them go a shocking 18 points adrift the title race, from Barca who are already the 2018/2019 La Liga champions. A disappointing season it has been for real Madrid who just lost away to Sociedad at the weekend, to add to their abysmal season so far.

Real Madrid has dropped off the ladder drastically this season and a season to forget in terms of performances and achievements, losing in a shocking way at home against Ajax and going 18 points behind the league winners. Their second to the last game of the season which ended in a loss, compounded to the problem and they now look like a team that will be focusing on catching up and covering the gap, rather than challenging for the title.

Real Sociedad are not doing badly at all this season considering their level and the teams above them. Currently sitting on 8th position and have a chance to move to 7th place depending on the results of the final game of the season. They are on a run of 3 straight wins including their emphatic 3-1 home win against the Los Blancos and will be looking to end the season on a high in their final fixture of the season.

Brief Post-Match Analyses

It was a great atmosphere at Anoeta, the home of Real Sociedad, both teams basically had nothing to play for, except for Sociedad who just want to finish as high as possible on the table.

Real Sociedad lineup in a 4-2-3-1 formation, while Real Madrid lineup in their usual 4-3-3 formation. The game began and Real Madrid already looked like they will get a comfortable victory away from home, but things didn’t turn out as expected and Sociedad quickly turned the table around.

Diaz scored the only goal for Madrid just 6 minutes into the game, following a fantastic individual effort.

Merino cancelled the lead for Sociedad in the 26th minute, firing in from close range from a very good attacking play.

Zaldua gave Sociedad the deserved lead in the 57th minute. A very clever header to beat the goalkeeper.

Barrenetxea cushioned the lead in the 67th minute with a rebound effort, to seal the victory for the home team.

The La Liga season is just a game remaining to come to an end, and from the look at the table, it is most likely that there will be an 18 points gap between Real Madrid and their arch-rivals, so the question is… Is One Season Enough for Real Madrid to Cover the 18 Points Gap Without Their Greatest Attacking Weapon?

My Opinion

For me, I don’t think so, except they make huge changes and also sign a couple of quality players. Ever since their attacking weapon left the club to Juventus, they have lost that cutting edge and are finding it difficult to convert chances that would have been converted if Ronaldo was still the focal point at the Los Blancos. It will still remain a difficult task to find a worthy replacement, which means that they will have to watch Barca and Messi dominate some more until Messi decides to quit. Until then, Madrid has a lot of work to do if they are to go back to the top.

And that is a wrap…

Do you think Real Madrid can cover this gap next season?
