When it comes to writing or talking about the best goal in football history, it is almost the same as saying the best food in the world as there are so many amazing foods that it becomes impossible for any food to be the best… Same can be said to goals in football as well, as there is almost nothing as the best goal in football - It all boils down to individual preferences and the significance of the goals.

We have witnessed some incredible goals, ones that even made the whole stadium to stand on their feet, yet, no goal can comfortably stand as the best goal, as lots of spectacular, remarkable, thunderous, tears-dropping goals have been scored over the years. Everyone has their opinion on which goal they feel is the most memorable they’ve witnessed as a football fan. For me, there are a whole lot of goals that were incredible, however, as part of this fun and exciting topic, I will have to pick the Drogba’s equalizing goal vs Bayern Munich in the champions league final.

Why did I choose this goal?

Reading this post, I know you might be wondering why I made the choice… Well, it was a difficult one to make and like I said above, there are so many amazing goals scored by great players in the past.

For me, I had to consider a few factors before making the decision to pick the Drogba’s equalizing goal vs Bayern Munich;-

  • The story – Road to Munich
  • The situation - Allianz Arena
  • The gravity of the goal
  • The effect of the goal till date

The Story – Road to Munich

Heart breaks after heart breaks…

Their champions league final loss to Man United…

Their heartbreaking elimination against Barcelona…

...

...

The time had come…

Prior to the champions league final Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, we all know what Chelsea had to go through to reach yet another champions league final in their history. (Their first attempt ended in tears after John Terry’s penalty kick slip).

Chelsea against Napoli was the match that almost everyone, including some section of the Chelsea fans, thought that it was the end of the road for Chelsea. Losing 3-1 away in the first leg against a very strong Napoli side and needed to win 4-1 in the second leg to secure qualification… this was an impossible task according to some, and it was the match that the odds and a lot of football fans had already written Chelsea off.

However, Chelsea pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in their history to eliminate Napoli 4-1 at the Bridge against all odds.

It didn’t end there… the difficulty level grew bigger as they had to face a Barcelona team who were untouchable as at that time. Tiki-taka at its best… A Barcelona team with Messi, Iniesta, Xavi… It is the end of the road for Chelsea according to rival fans, pundits and football lovers...

Yet again Chelsea pull-off the unexpected, one of the greatest victory moments in Chelsea’s history. 2-2 at the Camp Nou with 10 men on the pitch against a full-strength untouchable Barcelona team.

The situation - Allianz Arena

Chelsea finally made it to their second champions league final in their history. The difficulty level rose even higher… Playing a champions league final at the home of their opponent, at the Allianz Arena against Bayern Munich, a team who were on fire in terms of form. It was truly a very difficult situation for Chelsea.

The odds had already placed Chelsea as the underdogs and according to some fans, it was going to be yet another heartbreak for Chelsea.

The gravity of the goal

That goal was really a special goal considering the odds for Chelsea that night. A goal that paved way for Chelsea to lift their first-ever champions league trophy in their history. It was truly a remarkable goal. Allowing Chelsea win their first every champions league on Bayern Munich’s ground.

The effect of the goal till date

The effect of that goal is so strong that it is still having a positive effect on Chelsea up till this point.

Placing Chelsea in the same bracket with the teams that have their name on the UEFA champions league trophy winners list, dining with UEFA and fellow UCL winner (something not every club is privileged to do), the bragging rights over their fellow London rivals and the overall benefits that come from being regarded as champions league winners… That goal was a goal no single Chelsea fan would ever forget in a hurry. Making Chelsea’s cabinet complete with every trophy any club will ever dream of winning…
