The first round of the German Cup (Last 64) took place from Friday till Monday - and it accounted for some exciting matches. Notably the current title holder, Eintracht Frankfurt, have already been eliminated.
Ulm - Eintracht Frankfurt 2:1
Last season, Eintracht won their first title for 30 years, sensationally beating Bayern in the German Cup final. But now they have no chance of repeating the trick. In the first round, Frankfurt lost to the opponent who finished just 16th in the Regionalliga Suedwest (fourth tier of German football) last season. And Eintracht were actually down 0:2 before Goncalo Paciencia sweetened the bitter pill in the 90th minute. 0:5 in the German Super Cup against Bayern, now a fiasco in the German Cup - it seems like the head coach Adi Huetter, who replaced Niko Kovac, has much work to do.
Drochtersen/Assel - Bayern - 0:1
After destroying Frankfurt in the Super Cup, the German champions surprised in a negative way, as they struggled against a fourth-class opponent. In the provincial Drochtersen, a small town close to Hamburg, Niko Kovac fielded Bayern's best line-up, but the difference between Munich stars and local amateurs was hardly perceived. The hosts even missed a great chance to make it 1:0 - and untimately Bayern ground out a victory, as Robert Lewandowski scored a winner in the 81th minute.
Hastedt - Borussia Moenchengladbach - 1:11
This is an opposite example, as Gladbach fully dominated against an opponent from the fifth German league. Three Borussia players - Thorgan Hazard, Alassane Plea and Raffael - scored hat-tricks, and Hastedt was humiliated. It was actually even 11:0 before Kucuk scored a prestige goal late in the closing minutes.
Greuther Furth - Borussia Dortmund - 1:2
Unlike many other Bundesliga teams, Dortmund had a pretty strong rival, as Greuther Furth play in the second division. And at home, the team from Furth fought hard against the German heavyweights despite the absence of their coach Damir Buric, who had to miss the game because of family issues. After Sebastian Ernst put the hosts forward in the 77th minute, Borussia were on the verge of elimination, but the new signing Axel Witsel rescued them in the 95+th minute before Marco Reus scored a winner at the end of an extra time.
