Just 17 games have been played at the World Cup in Russia, which is slightly more than a quarter of the whole tournament programme. However, five own goals have been already scored - just as many as during the whole World Cup in 2014, and one shy of the record from the 1998 World Cup, when players found their own net six times.

Overall, there has been 46 own goals in the history of the World Cups, and the first one was scored by Mexico’s Manuel Rosas in 1930 in the match against Chile, lost by his team 0:3.

There have been only six matches in history where a team whose player scored an own goal eventually won the match. Most recently it happened in 2014 when Brazil beat Croatia 3:1 in the group stage despite Marcelo’s own goal - which, by the way, was the opening goal of the entire competition.

At this World Cup, all own goals ultimately led to defeats. Morocco’s Aziz Bouhadduz (against Iran), Australia’s Aziz Behic (against France), Nigeria’s Oghenekaro Etebo (against Croatia), Poland’s Thiago Cionek (against Senegal) and Egypt’s Ahmed Fathi (against Russia) - this is the list of players who have been unfortunate in 2018. It’s funny that the first two own goals were scored by the footballers with the same name Aziz!
