Chants of a "possible discriminatory" nature by England fans during their World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia are being investigated by FIFA, as reported by the BBC. It relates to the chanting of "no surrender" by supporters and other potentially discriminatory songs. England were beaten 2-1 in Moscow on Wednesday after extra time as they attempted to reach a first World Cup final since 1966.
"Proceedings have been opened against the Football Association. We can confirm that a report has been filed in relation to chants of a possible discriminatory nature by English fans," FIFA added.
Remarkably, BBC even did not dare to quote the chant in full (which is 'No surrender to the IRA'). Football chanting has come to a limit where you basically cannot even quote what they sing. But is there truly a method of making people in the stands chant graceful things? I do not think it can be done by fines.
Only self-policing and self control can help. If you start a chant and people to your right and left stop you, you'll stop. If they support you, you'll chant even more loud.
