Manchester United face Swiss side Young Boys under the lights at Old Trafford on Wednesday 08 December. Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has provided so much insight into how the team will look like when they march out of the Old Trafford tunnel later tonight.

The Need To Rotate

Rangnick spoke of the need to give opportunities to other players who haven't had much game time in recent games and also to assess how all the players are adapting to his new coaching and high-intensity football.

United have already made it through to the next round of the Champions League as group winners, so it is only ideal for the squad to be rotated given how thick and fast the games are coming. Key players need to be fresh and fit for upcoming crucial games in the league. Man United only just played Crystal Palace on Sunday, play against Young Boys tonight and will travel to Norwich in 3 days to play again in the Premier League.

Who Makes The Starting XI Tonight?

Ralf Rangnick confirmed in his media briefing ahead of the UCL tie that Dean Henderson and Donny Van de Beek are starters. This means David De Gea will be given a day off. The boss also confirmed that Serbian Nemanja Matic will captain the side. This being the case, it's only normal to think that club captain Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes will be rested.

Names such as Juan Mata, Aaron Wan-bissaka, Luke Shaw, Mason Greenwood, Amad Diallo, Anthony Elanga and Jesse Lingard were all mentioned during that media briefing. Mason Greenwood will most likely be a starter as he's one of the team regulars who haven't played much since his recovery from Covid. Rangnick also said that Mata and Jesse Lingard will also get minutes in the course of the game.

To conclude this piece, below is my predicted Man United starting XI for tonight's champions league fixture.

Although it's a 4-2-3-1 formation on paper just like in the last game against Crystal Palace, we will likely see the team revert or assume a 4-2-2-2 set up which is what Rangnick is known for in executing his high-press and intensive style of play.
