Most game are won on the midfield. It is the glue of a team. It is the first real line of defense and it the creator of chances for the striker!
A great midfield can suppress flaws in the defense department or if the attackers are not willing to score, net the ball themselves!
Last year Genk had a golden triangle in the center midfield. Berge as defensive midfielder allowing Pozuello and Malinovski to unleash their creativity. But both the offensive midfielders are gone and Berge has the promise that a transfer will be granted if a team is willing to break the transfer record of Genk.
So what do we have left!
Way too many players!
First start with Berge. Genk already announced that if Berge will be granted a transfer that he will not be replaced. Wouters will got more playing minutes.
And there is also Heynen who did play an excellent Play Off last season. It also looks like Piotrowski will have a place in the starting 11. Also 3 new players can play in the core of the team.
Hagi did choice Genk above teams with a higher status, because he knows that making minutes is important at his age. If he is only half as good as his dad was he will be an excellent signing.
Hrosovsky is also bought for the center of the team. He has to gave the team some experience on the midfield. Guiding youngsters on the pitch can be an important task. Last but not least also Nygren can play on these positions. But with only 17 years on the clock, wingers looks more suited for him.
This means that Folic is more or less free to search another team for this season. The best signal for him is that he had to sit on the bench when most of the substitutes were given playing minutes. He got some chances last year but never really stood up. And it football a player doesn't get many chances!
Wingers
Also here choices will have to be made.
At the moment there are 5 wingers in the selection. These 5 will have to battle it out for 2 spots. At the right there is no doubt that Ito will be number 1 in the picking order.
On the left there are more possibilities. Benson will more likely start the season because Nygren just did arrive and is only 17, Bogonda is recovering from a lumbago, Ndongala is injured after a contact and also Paintsil is unjured.
I do think that Ndongala will be given the information that it will be better to ask his manager to find a new team from him. This could be a loan or final transfer.
Opinion
I do think that there is enough quality in the team to play offensive football without giving away too many to the opponent. The quality of Genk should be offensive football. If Hagi and Nygren are really that good, it could become a great season again! I don't think that any new signings are needed for the midfield, it is strong enough.
