The UEFA super cup is hard evidence of the dominance of Spanish teams in Europe's elite competition. Real Madrid and their neighbour locked horns and for the first time, Atletico overcame Real to win the UEFA super cup. Matches between Real and Atleti is usually referred to as the battle between the rich and the poor but Atletico have risen tremendously that for the first time ever, they have a more valuable squad than Real Madrid.

The match in Estonia ended 4-2 after extra time in favour of Atletico Madrid and some of the talking points are discussed below.

COSTA IS AN ABSOLUTE MONSTER

Diego Costa is the reason the match went to extra time. He put Real Madrid to the sword twice with some clinical finishing. Chelsea made a very big mistake letting him go but their loss is Atletico's loss. He is a cunt as usual with his troublesome behaviour but in this match, he was an excellent cunt.

With Costa upfront, Atletico are ready to mount a serious challenge for trophies again.

BENZEMA MIGHT STILL HAVE IT IN HIM

Karim Benzema's wonderful performance has been overshadowed by the defeat but the Frenchman was in excellent form, linking fantastically with his teammates and produced a clinical finish. He showed glimpses of his old self and Real Madrid will have to hope they see more of that.

VARANE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BENCHED

Varane is one of the best defenders in the world. You don't have to take my word for it, he's among the 10man shortlist for FIFA the best award and the only defender in the Top 10. He's a rolls Royce of a defender, fast and hardly makes mistake but that wasn't the case in the Super cup. He looked a shadow of himself and you cannot blame him. He didn't miss a single minute in the World Cup. His compatriot, Greizmann was substituted in the match after being anonymous for most of the minutes he played.

Lopetegui should have trusted Nacho. Varane needs some time to get over that after World cup rustiness.

LEMAR IS A HIT SIGNING

While Varane was having a bad day, his compatriot Thomas Lemar was having a good one. He was a constant threat to Madrid's defence, tormenting Real's defence with his clever dribbles. He's a successful signing and expect more to come from him after he's fully integrated in the team.

DEFENSIVE ERRORS, DEFENSIVE ERRORS AND DEFENSIVE ERRORS

Real Madrid made some unusual defensive errors. Ramos, Marcelo, Carvajal and Varane made some high profile mistakes. Indeed, three out of the 4 goals they conceded could have been avoided.

CASEMIRO BRINGS BALANCE

The Brazilian was taken off after he appeared to have picked up an injury but his influence didn't go unnoticed. He was taken off when Madrid was leading 2-1 and it's no coincidence Atletico equalisei after he was taken off.

NO CRISTIANO EFFECT

The Cristiano effect is missing. Real do not have that leader in attack after the departure of the Portuguese. While a number of defensive errors cost Real, they also weren't clinical in front of goal. And we all know CR7, the GOAT doesn't need many chances to score.

Also, Madrid have lost their fear factor without Ronaldo. Teams can now face Madrid with more confidence and this match is a huge testament of that.

NAVAS MIGHT HAVE LOST THE GOALKEEPER CHALLENGE

After Madrid bought Courtois, the question was who will be Madrid's first choice goalkeeper. While it is open secret that Courtois will be preferred to Navas, the Costa Rican goalkeep was determined to fight for his place.

But his showing on Saturday might not be in his favour. While he did well for most of the match, he could have done more to stop Diego Cost first goal.. Don't be surprised when you see Thibaut Courtois in goal for Madrid in the coming weeks.

A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE BY LOPETEGUI

Yes, the Madrid boss has a lot of work to do especially with the defending. Atletico's players found so much joy and dissected Real's defence with ease.

Personally, I feel for the guy. He's unlucky to play his first competitive match against Atletico Madrid. But then, he can learn a thing or two from this match and try to improve his team ahead of the upcoming LA Liga season.

NO NEED FOR REAL TO PANIC

Real Madrid do not need to panic, at least not yet. If at all, they lost a worthy opponent. They are still a work in progress and the season has only just started. They have time to get everything in place.

ATLETICO BACK WITH A SHOUT

Atletico were poor last season. Their elimination from the UCL to the Europa league proves that. Even in the Europa league, they put in some poor performances but ultimately lifted the trophy. That isn't the Atletico we are used to. The Atletico that we know compete with Europe's elite team and that's what we saw on Saturday.

Atletico are back! Be wary of the Rojiblancos.

That's all I have for you guys. You have a different opinion, please comment below. Thanks for reading.
