FC Barcelona signed Memphis Depay on a free transfer at Olympique Lyon, while defensive talent Eric García was brought back from Manchester City. However, the Catalan giants were unable to register the duo in the La Liga squad which was due to the club's disastrous economy.

The duo started inside anyway when Barcelona kicked off the La Liga season against Real Sociedad. Garard Piqué and the rest of the squad had agreed to go down significantly in salary, making it possible for the Catalan big club to register Depay and García in the La Liga squad.

One FC Barcelona player who is apparently not willing to go down in salary is Samuel Umtiti. He is reportedly collecting €150,000 a week and it has made the world champion unpopular at Camp Nou that he has not been willing to sacrifice himself or his weekly salary for the club.

It has not been possible for Barcelona to find a club interested in buying Umtiti and it is also not possible for FC Barcelona to terminate Umtiti's contract for legal reasons.

Umtiti is apparently only interested in leaving Barcelona with another Champions League club, but so far only French side Nice and José Mourinhos AS Roma have shown interest in Umtiti. However, neither of the two clubs is in the Champions League competition.
